A simple way to create an artificial cave is to use polystyrene foam and concrete.
- Determine the size of the cave that can fit into your aquarium. Styrofoam is available in several sizes. If you buy sheets that are too thin for your needs, use a silicone sealant approved for aquariums to glue two pieces together.
- Form the outer portion of the polystyrene foam with a knife. Remove all straight edges and corners of the piece of foam, but do not be too concerned about creating rounded corners right now.
- Remove the styrofoam pieces with a knife to create the interior sections of the cave.
- Heat the styrofoam with a heat gun or hair dryer to remove any remaining rough edges on the cave. The heat will melt the foam and create rounded sections. Do not overheat or you may burn the styrofoam.
- Combine a mixture of cement and concrete strengthening acrylic with water according to the manufacturer's instructions. Add sufficient water to the mixture is liquid.
- Paint the cement mixture flowing over the grotto of polystyrene with a brush. Allow the cement to dry for 24 hours. This thin layer of concrete will provide a focal point for the next layer.
- Mix another batch of concrete and acrylic fortifier concrete, but use less water so that the consistency of the mixture will hold a shape.
- Apply the concrete mix to the cave Styrofoam with your hands. Allow the concrete to cure for 48 hours.
- Make another batch of concrete that flows add to the cave. The last layer is the final touch. Add color concrete concrete if you want to change the color of the cave. Adjust the thickness of the mixture if necessary to get a smooth finish on the cave. Apply the final coat of concrete with a brush and let it dry for 24 hours.
- Apply silicone to the bottom of the cave of Styrofoam, with all other sections of the cave that will come in contact with the sides of the aquarium. Styrofoam, even with the concrete is still buoyant and will float if it is not glued properly. Allow to cure completely silicone, generally around 48 hours, adding water in the fish tank.
